An introduction to Tennyson Insurance

Tennyson Insurance are charity insurance experts serving organisations that support society – charities, community groups, social enterprises and other not-for-profit bodies. We are a relative newcomer to the charity insurance market, founded in 2007, we were born as part of a specific initiative run by Zurich Insurance and the National Association for Voluntary and Community Action (NAVCA).

As a newcomer to charity insurance we had some natural advantages – we were able to recruit and train a team of sector experts and also invest in new IT that helps us to be very responsive. We also had one rather clear disadvantage – no customers – and this has shaped our approach ever since. We began by asking questions to learn what the sector wanted from a charity insurance company and we received some clear answers: low prices, clear advice, swift service and a meaningful understanding of the work that sector organisations carry out. We then learned that these characteristics were not commonly offered to charities and community groups. Equipped with this knowledge we have built a charity insurance company that works purely with sector organisations, offers clear advice and supplies very competitively priced, high quality charity insurance policies.

Our customers range from small community groups, who are happy to purchase their charity insurance online, to major national charities who engage with our senior consultants in order to review, quantify and then offset the risks that they face.

We now have over 1,500 customers and between 50 and 100 additional organisations are joining us each month. We estimate that we have saved the sector in excess of £1,000,000 in insurance premiums and in our two most recent customer satisfaction surveys (conducted in June and September 09) 260 customers rated our service as follows: 99% said that we had taken the time to understand their needs and 96% said that they would recommend us to another organisation.

Our team of 15 people work with customers across the UK from our base in Chichester, West Sussex. We support the values of the sector through our partnership with Stonepillow, a charity that supports homeless and vulnerable adults, and through our development of the innovative ‘Charity Builder’ service (see menu bar above for more details).
