Motor Insurance

Learn more about Motor Insurance with Tennyson the charity insurance experts

A minimum level of motor insurance is a legal requirement: you may not use any vehicle in a public place without at least Third Party Insurance which is explained below.

Who needs Motor Insurance?

Any individual or organisation which owns and uses a vehicle in a public place.

What does it cover?

There are three types of motor insurance available:

Third Party: This is the most basic Line of cover. If you have an accident involving another vehicle, and it was found to be your fault, the damage to the other vehicle and payment of compensation for injury or death would be covered, but not your own. This means that any damage to your car would have to be paid for by you.

Third Party Fire and Theft: This line of cover provides more protection than third party only. It still only covers the other party’s car in the event of an accident, but it will cover damage caused to your vehicle in the event of a fire or theft.

Fully Comprehensive: This level of cover is the most extensive and protects your vehicle as well as those of third parties. This means that if an accident is your fault, both you and the other party are covered. You may be responsible for a portion of your own vehicle damage by way of policy excess.

What might it cost?

Cars are categorised into insurance groups numbered 1 – 50, with the lower numbers being deemed lower risk and therefore cheaper to insure. The rating is based upon the power of the vehicle, the cost (to buy & to repair) and the likelihood of theft.
