Learn more about Libel and Slander Cover with Tennyson the charity insurance experts

Libel and Slander are the terms used to describe an individual making allegations or accusations about another person. They cover the written word (libel) and the spoken word (slander).

Example

An article appears in your quarterly newsletter which accuses a local business of selling goods that are unfit for use. The business seeks compensation from you for libel.

Who needs Libel & Slander Insurance?

Libel & Slander cover is a line of insurance particularly relevant to organisations or groups that produce publications or broadcast messages.

What does it cover?

Instances covered by Libel & Slander insurance include the following:

  • Libels appearing in publications which are normal to the everyday tasks of the organisation.
  • Defamatory slanders made by employees or directors during their normal duties.

Additionally associated costs such as legal expenses are covered.

What does it not cover?

Importantly, volunteers are generally not covered by Libel & Slander cover. Cover is restricted to directors and employees, and this should be considered when thinking about which insurance lines best suit your organisation.

How much cover do I get?

This is entirely at the discretion of your organisation and should be worked out by considering the likely value of claims made against you. However, you could be steered by the levels that Zurich can provide. These are: £100,000, £250,000, £500,000, or £1 million.
