What is Charity Builder UK?
A web-based tool that will help small and medium-sized charities to manage their Human Resources and Health & Safety processes. It won’t just signpost advice, or provide templates to cut and paste, it will interact with you and actually produce tailored documents such as: job descriptions, employment contracts, staff handbooks and Health & Safety plans which you can then print, use and file. Its content is written and kept up to date by expert lawyers. Plus, for smaller charities, CBUK will also offer headline advice on subjects such as finances, governance and compliance.
What will it cost?
Nothing. We will provide it free of charge to charities and other not-for-profit organisations.
When will it be available?
September 2009, if all goes according to plan. We are currently running a pilot to ensure that CBUK works as well as we would like it to.
How can I get hold of it once it is launched?
There are two ways to get a free login to CBUK:

- Contact your Local Infrastructure Organisation (LIO). Also often known as a ‘CVS’ (Council for Voluntary Service) these organisations specialise in providing help and support to small and mid-sized charities and voluntary organisations. You may well already be in contact with your nearest LIO, if not try ‘google-ing’ your nearest major town or city along with the words ‘voluntary organisations’ and you will almost certainly find them.
Why are you providing CBUK free of charge/ what’s in it for Tennyson Insurance?
Two things: advertising and making a contribution to the sector.
As a relatively new company we want to get our name known in the sector and therefore CBUK will carry our brand on its home page and include a short guide on insurance written by us. However, if brand awareness was our only aim we could have achieved this through more conventional means and this is where our second goal comes in. When we launched Tennyson Insurance we decided that we would try to be more than ‘just another insurance company’. We hope that we have shown this through our innovative Insurance Health Check programme and now want to show it again through the launch of CBUK.
Will it always be free (or is this a cunning marketing ploy and you’ll charge for it later)?
It is our intention that it will always be free, there are no plans to charge for this version of CBUK. We will always be totally open with potential customers and therefore we do want to make the following two notes with regard to the service:
- In the (hopefully) unlikely event that CBUK has very few users we may have to withdraw the interactive HR and Health & Safety elements of the system. Should this occur we will give all users 6 months notice which would give them plenty of time to complete any outstanding work and copy files to their own systems
- Should CBUK prove to be a big hit we will consult with its users to ask them if there is other content that they would like to be developed. If the answer is ‘yes’ then an enhanced version of CBUK may be built and some of the new elements of it could be charged for. In this event the current version of CBUK will remain free and users will not be pressured into purchasing new content.
